The 43-mile walk began at the MLK Community Center in Springfield. Western Mass News had the opportunity to catch up with the group during their march at the Amherst Survival Center. There, they saw many familiar faces, including Congressman Jim McGovern, who is now in his twelfth year of participating. As he explained, "I feel really good to be here today. My legs are aching, but it's a great feeling, especially after the election. I believe in doing something positive and good."This encounter at the Amherst Survival Center highlighted the collective effort and dedication of the participants. It showed how individuals from different walks of life come together to make a difference in the fight against hunger.

The Origin and Growth of the Event

Formerly known as Monte’s March, local radio host Monte Belmonte initiated this event 15 years ago. He started by pushing an empty shopping cart from Northampton to Greenfield with the goal of raising $5,000. Surprisingly, he managed to raise $13,000 that year, which laid the foundation for the 43-mile march that now spans across three counties.Belmonte expressed his pride in the community, stating, "We feel really proud of the community we live in. It's evident how generous they are and how eager they are to get involved. Their support has been crucial in the growth and success of this event."This story of the event's origin showcases the power of one person's initiative and the collective response it generated. It inspired others to join the cause and continue the march against hunger.

The Importance of Donations and the Food Bank's Goal

The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts heavily relies on donations to fuel its essential programs. In recent years, there has been an increase in demand for these services. This year, the pantry's goal for the march is $500,000, which will enable them to provide about 1.5 million meals to the community.Food Bank Executive Director Andrew Morehouse emphasized the significance of the march and the support it brings. He said, "They are helping us raise awareness and providing their energy. We are on track to meet our goal, and that gives us great excitement. Every donation counts and helps us make a real impact on the lives of those in need."The need for donations is clear, and the march serves as a powerful tool to gather support and resources.
