Members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society Food Pantry in Gladstone are actively engaged in collecting donations for the TV6 Canathon this week. On Monday, they picked up an impressive five carts of canned goods from Gladstone High School, with Pantry Manager Mary Knoch stating that students had collected over 2,000 pounds of food. This timely donation helps to meet the needs of the many needy people in the area, including the homeless. During the holidays, food is being distributed rapidly from the pantry.

Monetary Donations and Their Importance

Monetary donations play a crucial role in the St. Vincent de Paul Society Food Pantry. As Pantry Manager Mary Knoch explained, these funds are used to purchase essential toiletries and perishables. This ensures that the pantry can offer a comprehensive range of items to those in need. Without these monetary contributions, the pantry would struggle to meet the diverse needs of the community. In addition to the St. Vincent de Paul Society Food Pantry in Gladstone, four other food pantries in Rock and Escanaba are also benefiting from the TV6 Canathon. One such pantry is the Salvation Army in Escanaba. Captain Doug Winters emphasized the significance of Canathon efforts, stating that they stock the pantry's shelves for almost four months each year. This provides a much-needed lifeline for families during the holiday season when financial constraints are often tight.

The Need for Expiration Date Awareness

When donating food from home, it is essential for community members to check the expiration dates on the bottoms of cans. Captain Doug Winters of the Salvation Army pantry reminded everyone of this important detail. Pantries cannot use food that has passed its expiration date, as it may pose a risk to the health and well-being of those they serve. By being vigilant about expiration dates, donors can ensure that their contributions are both useful and safe.

The Convenience of Online Donations

In addition to the physical drop-off points, the TV6 Canathon also offers the option to donate online. This provides a convenient way for people to contribute from the comfort of their own homes. Clicking here will lead you to additional Canathon drop-off points or the online donation page. By making a donation, you are directly helping to support local food pantries and make a positive impact on the lives of those in need.Copyright 2024 WLUC. All rights reserved.
