The Impactful 'Fill the Dome' Event in Fargo

Tuesday morning in Fargo, North Dakota witnessed an extraordinary feat as local students came together to raise an astonishing 119,000 pounds of food for the 18th annual 'Fill the Dome' event. Usually, one would find the NDSU Bison at the FARGODOME, but on this day, the scene was transformed. Dozens of students dedicated their morning to packing boxes filled with hundreds of non-perishable food donations. Among them were the Metro Area Student Ambassadors (MASA), who played a crucial role in leading the event.

Lucy Schaffer's Perspective

Lucy Schaffer, an ambassador, shared her thoughts, saying, "We work with our student councils and schools in general to bring in food and money. This event is a great way to make a difference and help those in need." The collective effort of these students has been remarkable over the years. Since 2007, more than 50 area schools have joined in, contributing a staggering 2.6 million pounds of food and over $840,000. This year alone, 119,552 pounds of food and about $30,000 were raised. These donations will provide more than 99,600 meals to those facing food insecurity.

Theme and Activities

This year's theme, "Round Up Hunger – Yeehaw for a Cause," added a touch of excitement to the event. MASA led two days of activities, including awarding The Most Creative School – Oak Grove and The School with the Most Food Donations – Moorhead High. The energy and excitement among the students were palpable as they worked towards a common goal. CEO of the Great Plains Food Bank, Melissa Sobolik, emphasized the significance of the event, stating, "A hot meal on a table tonight makes a family feel normal. It allows them to not have to choose between food and other essential needs. While it may seem like just a can or a box, it holds so much more meaning."

The Impact on the Community

The FARGODOME floor was filled with hundreds of cans and boxes, a visual reminder of the impact this event has. Nick Bremer, a volunteer manager at the Great Plains Food Bank, highlighted the importance, saying, "We saw a significant increase in need for food during and after COVID. 'Fill the Dome' and our work at the food bank have made a big difference. It's not just about providing food; it's about showing that we care and are willing to take the time to ensure no one goes hungry." Schaffer added, "I know people with food insecurities in my community. This has developed a passion in me to serve and do whatever I can to help."

The Journey of Donations

Once the trucks were filled with donations, they were transported to the food bank. Bremer explained the process, "We'll sort out the donations at the food bank, put away the pallets, and get them ready for checking and weighing. Then, they'll be distributed to our partnering agencies to reach those in need." For those still interested in donating, 'Fill the Dome' continues to accept donations at www.fillthedome.org.This event serves as a powerful reminder of the power of community and the impact that even small efforts can have. It shows that when we come together, we can make a significant difference in the lives of those facing food insecurity.
