Just a year ago, Ziata started the Paideia Global food pantry in his shed. He began by picking up local produce to supplement food shortages. This simple act has now grown into a much larger operation, with the pantry partnering with local food banks and independent farmers to distribute food to locals. The growth has been remarkable, as it has expanded to meet the increasing demand and serve more localities.
Initially focused on his congregation, the pantry has now become a vital resource for the entire Harrisonburg and Bridgewater communities. The ability to distribute such a large amount of food each week is a testament to Ziata's dedication and the community's support.
Ziata, who immigrated from the Democratic Republic of Congo, noticed that some of his Congolese congregants were struggling to find affordable produce similar to what they were used to in their home country. This led him to focus on meeting the cultural demands for food. His pantry offers a variety of food that not all pantries can provide, setting it apart from others in the area.
By working with food banks and orienting provisions towards cultural needs, Ziata is ensuring that everyone has access to the food they are accustomed to. This attention to detail has made his pantry a go-to place for many, especially those who value the cultural aspect of their food.
Ziata's ability to speak multiple languages, including Spanish and French, has also played a crucial role. Many clients are drawn to his pantry because of the relatability they can find. Language barriers can often prevent people from accessing resources, but Ziata's fluency helps break down those barriers and connect with a wider audience.
His diverse language skills allow him to communicate effectively with different communities and understand their unique needs. This has further enhanced the pantry's ability to serve the local population and make a positive impact.
