BALTIMORE — In a significant turn of events for the local restaurant scene, Nacho Mama’s, after a remarkable 30-year run, is set to close its Towson and Canton locations. As announced in a social media post on Tuesday, this decision was not taken lightly. “Although this decision has not been easy for us, our family is grateful to our community that we have been blessed to serve for over three decades,” the statement said. The restaurants will bid farewell on January 12, 2025, and the owners have not yet clarified the reasons behind this closure. “When my late husband and partner decided to open Nacho Mama’s, he liked to blame his decision on this witty phrase: ‘An Irishman decides to open a Mexican restaurant in a Polish neighborhood…’ and the rest is history,” the statement added. However, it’s not all bad news. The owners have assured that their sister restaurants, Mama’s on the Half Shell in Canton and Owings Mills, will continue to serve customers. These establishments remain open and are likely to carry on the legacy. In a similar vein, a week prior to this announcement, Mother’s Federal Hill Grille also made a big decision. It will be closing its doors after 27 years in the business. Owner Dave Rather expressed his excitement about looking ahead to the next phase in Mother’s history. “While this chapter is closing, we are excited to look ahead to the next phase in Mother’s history, with the younger generation continuing to grow and expand the brand,” he said in a statement posted to social media. Mother’s Grille has locations in Arnold and Timonium which will remain open. The flagship Federal Hill location will close its doors on January 19, 2025. Rather mentioned that he is closing the Fed Hill location to focus on the other two locations and that he and his wife are slowing down while his son and other managers take on more responsibility. “Now there’s tons of places down here, 25 bars and restaurants,” he said. “The restaurant business is tough. You know, anybody that can last this long, it’s saying something.”Christian Olaniran, a digital producer for CBS Baltimore, has been closely following these developments.
