The Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta has taken a significant step forward in enhancing its audio capabilities by installing the latest Meyer Sound PANTHER system. This upgrade replaces the venue's original MICA® system, which had been in place since 2007. The new setup aims to improve vocal clarity and coverage, particularly for performances at the farthest reaches of the hall. With a focus on modernization, the theatre enlisted international consultants Theatre Projects to design a solution that would meet the diverse needs of Broadway shows, ballets, operas, concerts, poetry readings, stand-up comedy, and other special events. After thorough analysis and testing, the decision was made to proceed with the PANTHER system, renowned for its exceptional sound quality and ease of integration with existing infrastructure.

The Cobb Energy Centre, known for hosting a wide array of cultural events, recognized the need to enhance its 17-year-old sound system. One of the primary objectives was to improve vocal intelligibility in the uppermost sections of the auditorium. Theatre Projects Associate Greg Hanson conducted an extensive evaluation using Meyer Sound’s MAPP 3D tool, collaborating closely with Meyer Sound’s Director of System Optimization, Bob McCarthy. The team recalibrated the existing loudspeaker setup to assess whether adjustments could extend its lifespan or confirm the necessity of an upgrade. The analysis ultimately validated the decision to move forward with a new system.

The choice of PANTHER was driven by its superior clarity and coverage, as well as the seamless transition to a powered system with the existing infrastructure. Brian Fiegelman, the Cobb Centre’s Director of Production, emphasized the confidence in sticking with Meyer Sound. To evaluate the system, the team demoed PANTHER large-format linear line array loudspeakers and the 2100-LFC low-frequency control element at a local vendor. Mike Froedge, the Cobb Energy Centre’s A1 mixer, noted the phenomenal performance even without tuning or timing adjustments. The new system includes left and right arrays of 14 PANTHER loudspeakers, a center array of six LEOPARD compact linear line array loudspeakers, and a cardioid array of three 2100-LFC elements, replacing the original 24 MICA line array loudspeakers and CQ series main loudspeakers.

The installation, led by integrator Sound Associates, faced challenges due to the old rigging being welded onto I-beams. However, through collaboration with the Cobb Centre team, Theatre Projects, Sound Associates, Atlanta Rigging Services, and Meyer Sound, the project was completed in just four days. Domonic Sack, Project Engineer at Sound Associates, praised the teamwork that ensured the speakers were correctly positioned for optimal audience access. The new system not only eliminated the need for half of the delays but also improved sight lines. Froedge highlighted the consistent clarity and intelligibility of the center cluster, making every seat in the house a great experience. Fiegelman added that the 2100-LFC array supports most programming without requiring floor subs, offering impressive low-end consistency.

The upgraded Meyer Sound PANTHER system has proven to be versatile, accommodating a wide range of performances from hip hop to classical music. Engineers have consistently praised the sound quality, noting that it delivers exceptional fidelity across all genres. Froedge remarked that the system addresses all issues related to coverage, vocal presence, and stereo imaging. With this new setup, the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre is well-equipped to continue delivering outstanding cultural experiences. Fiegelman concluded that if anyone is not satisfied with the mix on this P.A., they simply cannot mix. The theatre is now set to provide an unparalleled auditory experience for audiences, ensuring that every performance resonates perfectly throughout the venue.
