Before the intense Crosstown Shootout between the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University, there lies a more heartwarming and friendly rivalry. The Crosstown Shootout has a long history dating back to 1928, but this new food-focused initiative is making a significant impact.

UC's Bearcats Food Pantry and Resource Center

This vital center provides an array of essential items to those in need. Free food, including a variety of options, is readily available to students, staff, and faculty. Hygiene items, cleaning supplies, diapers, and wet wipes are also stocked, ensuring that basic needs are met. Additionally, the pantry goes the extra mile by offering professional clothing to students preparing for important interviews or class presentations. It's a lifeline for many, helping them navigate through the challenges of college life while focusing on their studies.

Associate Dean of Students at the University of Cincinnati, Dan Cummins, emphasizes the tough choices students often face. With the increasing cost of tuition, books, and living expenses, students are forced to prioritize. The need for food assistance becomes evident as they struggle to balance paying for essential utilities like rent, electricity, gas, and internet, which are crucial for their schoolwork in this digital age.

The Bearcats Food Pantry plays a crucial role in supporting the campus community, providing a safety net during difficult times and enabling students to focus on their academic pursuits.

Xavier University's Store

Xavier University's Store is a haven for enrolled students, offering a wide range of non-perishable, fresh, and frozen items. School supplies, household products, and hygiene items are also available, ensuring that students have everything they need to thrive.

Associate Director of Care and Support Services at Xavier University, Ashley Henkes, highlights the common misconception that college students don't struggle. In reality, many students are stretched thin when it comes to paying tuition bills, leaving little funds for groceries. The Store becomes a crucial source of support, providing students with the necessary items to maintain their well-being.

Both food pantries serve approximately 1,500 students, and the demand is only on the rise. They rely heavily on donations to keep their operations running smoothly, and every contribution makes a difference in the lives of these students.

During this weekend's game, a friendly competition takes place between the two universities. You can donate to either or both pantries at any time, and the winner will be announced after the game. Tip-off for the Crosstown Shootout is at 2 p.m. at Fifth Third Arena on Saturday. This is the third year of the Crosstown Foodout, and in the past two years, the Musketeers have emerged victorious in both the game and the foodout. Let's come together and support these students in need.
