"Students' Food Drive: A Lifeline for 19 Counties"

IDEA Yukon's Food Drive Initiative

Eighth and ninth graders at IDEA Yukon actively participated in a non-perishable food drive from November 18. With about 15 volunteers throughout the week through their community service club and ninth graders, they were able to gather a significant amount of food. The drive not only helped ninth graders earn volunteer hours and extracurricular credit but also demonstrated their willingness to make a difference.During the week, teachers like Britney Berggren and school counselor Katelyn Madrid played crucial roles. Berggren led the effort to bring the food into the food bank with the help of around eight volunteers. Madrid was amazed to see the students' enthusiasm for engaging with the community and giving back.

West Texas Food Bank's Impact and Need

Texas ranks second in the nation for food insecurity, and the West Texas Food Bank serves 19 counties. Currently, there are more than 48,000 people experiencing food insecurity, with children under 18 making up 40% of those served. Autumn Simpson, the director of external affairs at the food bank, emphasized the importance of partnerships like this one with IDEA Yukon students.Simpson stated that they are feeding more people than ever before, with 650 families coming through their drive-through in Odessa last week and 630 in Midland the week before. Canned food is especially valuable as it is expensive to purchase. The food bank is accepting all kinds of canned food and holiday food as long as it is shelf stable.People can drop off food anytime this week on Monday and Tuesday. If they can't make it during these days, they can come back the following week from Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. or 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Additionally, people can still pick up food boxes.

Volunteer Opportunities and Food Bank's Mission

This time of year is crucial for the food bank as they receive the most help. Volunteers are needed to process the food drive, clean the cans, and ensure they are not dented or expired. The food bank needs help year-round, not just during the holidays. Monetary donations through the website, Instagram, Facebook, or LinkedIn pages also support their operations.Simpson emphasized that the food bank is there to help at any time. They do not judge and are committed to providing assistance. Whether in Dawson, Terlingua, Presidio, Monahans, or any other area within the 19 counties, if people need help, they can reach out and get the necessary food.Students also shared their perspectives. Eighth grader Laylah Beltran believed that the food drive was for those in need, especially considering the large amount collected. Berggren noted that the students were excited to take part and that it was a rewarding experience. She hopes that students realize the ease and rewards of giving back to their community. In conclusion, the students' food drive for the West Texas Food Bank has made a significant impact. It shows the power of community collaboration and the importance of helping those in need. Through their efforts, they have contributed to feeding families and making a difference in 19 counties.
