Frozen Foods Recall: Listeria Concerns and Affected Brands

Nov 28, 2024 at 3:14 PM
A frozen foods company that specializes in waffles and pancakes, sold at major US supermarkets like Walmart, Kroger, and Whole Foods, has expanded a recall due to fears of listeria contamination. TreeHouse Foods, a prominent snacking and beverage manufacturer, initially recalled products from last month and has now extended it to include all items manufactured at their facility in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. This expanded recall encompasses over 40 brands of frozen waffles and pancakes sold in popular retailers such as Whole Foods, Target, Walmart, Kroger, Albertson’s, Publix, Trader Joe’s, HEB, Aldi, Dollar General, Foodhold, and Wegman’s.

Recall Details and Affected Products

The recall was announced due to concerns that listeria might have been detected at the company’s Brantford facility. The recalled products have best-by dates ranging from Oct. 1, 2024 to Oct. 11, 2025. TreeHouse Foods stated that the recall was expanded based on additional testing at the manufacturing site. There have been no confirmed reports of illness linked to the recalled products so far.Listeria is a serious infection that poses the greatest risk to older adults, immunodeficient people, and pregnant women. It can cause various symptoms such as fever, aches, headaches, stiffness, confusion, loss of balance, convulsions, and diarrhea. The bacteria has an incubation period of three to 70 days. The company published a list of dozens of brand names affected by the recall. These include 365 Organic (mainly found in Whole Foods), Good & Gather (primarily sold at Target), and Great Value (usually found on Walmart shelves). Other affected products are those sold under brand names like Kodiak Cakes, Nature’s Path Organic, and Wild Harvest.

Previous Recall Incident

Last year, TreeHouse Foods issued an extensive recall of broth products sold at Costco due to what they called the “potential for non-pathogenic microbial contamination.” This shows that the company has had previous issues with product quality and recalls.

Share Performance

Shares of TreeHouse Foods, a multinational corporation based in Oak Brook, Ill., are down more than 18% year to date. This indicates that the recall has had an impact on the company’s financial performance and market value.

Former First Lady’s Connection

Former First Lady Michelle Obama held a seat on the company’s board of directors from 2005 until 2007, a year before her husband, then-US Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), successfully ran for the presidency. This connection might add some significance to the company and its operations.
