A collaborative initiative between Oberlin City, its schools, and the Firelands Association for the Visual Arts (FAVA) is set to honor Black History Month with a vibrant exhibition of student-created artwork. This year's project brings together the talents of young artists from Oberlin High School who have been inspired by significant figures in African American history. Under the guidance of their instructor, these students have produced compelling portraits that will not only be showcased at FAVA Gallery but also transformed into eye-catching banners adorning downtown street poles. The chosen pieces will highlight the rich heritage and inspiring stories of notable individuals, creating an engaging public art experience throughout February.

Community engagement plays a crucial role in this annual event. A panel of local leaders has carefully selected twelve outstanding artworks to feature prominently as banners along South Main Street. In addition, past banners will grace North Main Street and College Street, ensuring the continuation of this meaningful tradition. Kathleen Jackson, the executive director of FAVA, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing how it celebrates the students' creativity while honoring important historical figures. Diane Ramos, communications manager for the city, highlighted Oberlin's proud history and commitment to arts and culture, underscoring the importance of such collaborations in fostering community spirit and education.

The exhibition opens on February 1st and will remain on display until March 2nd, inviting residents and visitors alike to appreciate the artistic achievements of Oberlin's youth. An opening reception and awards ceremony will take place on the first day, offering an opportunity for the community to gather and celebrate the talented artists. By showcasing these works, Oberlin demonstrates its dedication to preserving and promoting cultural diversity and historical awareness, reinforcing the value of education and artistic expression in building a more inclusive society.
