During the end of the semester at Syracuse University, an exciting opportunity has emerged for students. The Syracuse University Libraries is presenting a unique chance where students can not only reduce their library fines but also make a positive impact on others. This initiative, named "Food for Fines," will be operational from Dec. 6 through Dec. 17.
Helping Others While Clearing Fines
All Libraries patrons with overdue circulation fines can take advantage of this program. By donating healthy, nonperishable food and hygiene items at the circulation desks of Bird, Carnegie, Law, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial and King + King Architecture Libraries, they can see a reduction in their fines. All food items will be generously donated to the Hendricks Chapel Food Pantry. It's important to note that fine reductions do not include interlibrary loan and lost book fees.Even those without current fines are encouraged to contribute. For toilet paper, lip balm, rice, pasta, canned vegetables/fruits/beans and pasta sauce, fines will be reduced by $1 per item. Liquid soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, cereal and canned meats/fish will lead to a $2 reduction per item. Lotion, oatmeal, canned soup/baked beans, peanut butter/jelly, tea, hot chocolate, ramen noodles and granola will result in a $3 reduction per item. And for shampoo/conditioner, deodorant and coffee, fines will be reduced by $4 per item. It is advisable to ensure that contributions are not open or expired and that single-use items are preferred. For more details about "Food for Fines" and how to participate, students can contact Nick Olivieri at naolivie@syr.edu. This initiative truly showcases the spirit of giving and community support within the Syracuse University campus and community.
